With The War Within expansion set to drop later this year, World of Warcraft is about to get a major level-up with its brand new hero talent system. Blizzard’s cooking up what they’re calling an “evergreen form of character progression,” which means fresh spells and abilities for every class and specialization in the game. And yep, it’s still in the oven, but Blizzard’s letting us sneak a peek at the recipe through a preview of the new talent trees.
For those eager to dive into specifics, the spotlight’s on the Keeper of the Grove Druid, Dark Ranger Hunter, Frostfire Mage, and Oracle Priest specializations. Once your character hits level 71, you’ll unlock these hero talent trees, each decked out with 11 new skills and abilities that add more layers to your class’s existing talents. Plus, there’s a “keystone” ability that’s all about giving each talent tree its unique vibe.
Blizzard’s dishing out the details: You can only have one hero talent tree active at a time, but swapping them out is as easy as changing your current class talents. With three hero talent trees for most classes (four for druids because they’re special, and two for demon hunters), each specialization gets to pick from two trees, giving you plenty of options to play around with.
Take warriors, for instance – they’re getting the Slayer, Colossus, and Mountain Thane hero talents to mix and match. Depending on your spec, you’ll have a couple of these to choose from, ensuring your warrior feels just right.
Blizzard’s mission? To add more depth to your builds without messing with the core mechanics you know and love. They’re all about giving you the freedom to pick a talent tree that matches your playstyle or the aesthetic you’re going for, all while keeping the balance tight so you’re not feeling pressured to pick a “meta” option for certain content.
Stay tuned, because Blizzard’s going to keep rolling out previews of these hero talent trees in the lead-up to The War Within’s big launch. In the meantime, you can deep dive into the talents for the classes mentioned earlier on their developer blog. Get ready to spice up your WoW gameplay!
